As a holistic health coach and a Blue Zones expert, I design bathrooms to support clients' whole health picture with the most ease as possible so self-care isn't a chore. It's really fun to explore what amazing features would totally wow people but also what would be truly additive to their wellbeing.
A bathroom is only as luxurious as its ability to immerse you in ultimate comfort, to de-stress you, and inspire genuine happiness. Here is a list of luxurious bathroom elements that guide clients into taking care of themselves, Blue Zone-style, meaning built-in daily habits that contribute to greater health and longevity:
An amazing tub, if baths help you de-stress. There is a ton of emerging tech in this category including water-saving features, aromatherapy, and chromotherapy. We walk clients through all of the options.
Heated floor-- if your floor is being replaced... add this feature. No one has ever regretted putting it in but almost everyone who does not do it regrets it. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a very expensive addition, and it's much more eco-friendly than conventional heating modalities.
There are many features and technology available to create an incredible shower experience, from strategically placed, multi-function, water-saving jets to steam shower units, chromotherapy, seating, curb-less installations for aging-in-place, etc... We deep dive into how to maximize the experience.
Art. While incredible stone and beautiful fixtures are art to us, we also encourage people to add visual stimuli that are special to them; anything from a spectacular sculpture to a piece of art made by someone special. People in Blue Zones communities create areas to honor loved ones. This can serve that purpose and inspire gratitude.
Smart storage and pride of place for clients' favorite self-care products, like loofahs and essential oils, is important so they actually get used.
In line with Biophilic Design principles, lighting is critical to how we feel. Natural light should be maximized, and any manufactured light carefully considered. For sustainability, Energy Star-rated products are best.
Same with color choices. Investigating if clients prefer a light and airy or dark and moody space is critical to their enjoyment of the bathroom on a daily basis.
Natural materials and forms are incredibly important in how we feel in a space. Add real flowers, natural stone, and organic textures to replicate the sensory variations we experience in nature.
We help clients select products that are good to you and to the environment including air-purifying or VOC-free paints and carbon-neutral finishes; safe, sustainable floor and wall coverings, responsible woods, tile etc., and energy-efficient water heaters, fans, toilets, faucets, and showerheads.
One of the biggest ways clients can reduce the impact of their renovation on the environment is to responsibly get rid of the materials being replaced or hire us to do so. As a GREENLeader and a member of GFDA this is very important for our firm.
